Restart Racing push forward after mixed Saturday at Oulton Park

Published on June 6, 2026

Restart Racing showed strong race pace on a mixed Saturday at Oulton Park, with Chris Smiley and James Dorlin both recovering from a frustrating qualifying session to move forward in the Race to Pole ahead of Sunday’s three Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship races.

The fourth round of the 2026 BTCC season saw the team travel to Oulton Park in Cheshire, with mixed weather conditions greeting the field on Saturday morning. After a cold and damp start to the day, the rain eased in time for the only free practice session of the weekend, with conditions drying enough for slick tyres.

Both drivers made an encouraging start to the weekend with Chris finishing third in free practice and James close behind in sixth. It provided plenty of optimism heading into qualifying, particularly with both cars showing the pace to compete well inside the top ten.

However, qualifying proved to be a more frustrating affair for the team. Both drivers had their fastest laps removed due to track limits, costing them strong starting positions for the Race to Pole. As a result, James lined up 13th, while Chris started 16th.

The Race to Pole took place on soft tyres, with the format setting the grid for Sunday’s opening race. James made a strong start and quickly moved up to 11th after passing Gordon Shedden and Dan Rowbottom at Hislops Chicane, while Chris also gained ground on the opening lap, moving up to 14th as Tom Chilton dropped out of contention and Shedden suffered damage.

A safety car was deployed on lap two following an incident at Island Bend, neutralising the race and extending it to 13 laps. While still under safety car conditions, Chris gained another place as Rowbottom pitted, moving the Northern Irishman up to 13th.

When racing resumed, Chris continued his charge and passed Charles Rainford on Lakeside Straight to take 12th. Both Restart Racing cars then moved further forward after Sam Osborne went off at Cascades, putting Chris and James into 10th and 11th respectively.

Chris passed James for 10th, and then the pair closed onto the back of a busy pack of cars battling from eighth to 11th and pushed hard in the closing stages. On lap 12, he tried to make a move on Aiden Moffat’s Audi into Old Hall Corner, but Moffat defended well and held position. Chris crossed the line in 10th, just 0.052 seconds behind the Scottish driver, while James followed close behind in 11th before later receiving a five-second penalty for contact with Shedden at Hislops Chicane, dropping him to 17th.

Despite the frustration of qualifying and James’s post-race penalty, the team showed strong race pace throughout the day and will head into Sunday’s three races with confidence. With the soft and hard tyre compounds in use this weekend, and each driver required to run the hard tyre once and the soft tyre twice across race day, strategy is expected to play an important role.

Chris said: “That is qualifying and the Race to Pole done on Saturday at Oulton Park. The day started off really well. We were third in free practice this morning and the car felt good. There were a few areas where we could improve and find a bit more time, but overall it was a positive start.

“We went out in Q1 and, unfortunately, we had massive oversteer everywhere. Whenever we put the new tyres on the car, there was a big change in the balance, so that was frustrating.

“We started 16th in the Race to Pole, but pushed forward well and finished 10th. The car felt really good in race trim, so I am looking forward to the three races tomorrow. I think we are in a really good place to get a result.”

James said: “Saturday is done here at Oulton Park and it has been very, very frustrating. It feels like a bit of a case of what could have been, because the pace was pretty good in free practice, where we finished 6th.

“We carried that into qualifying and had a good lap that I think would have put us inside the top seven, but it was taken away for track limits, which I personally don’t feel I exceeded. But the rules are the rules, so we started 13th.

“We made some good progress early on and finished 11th in the end, with Chris just ahead in 10th. For the team, it was not the best result, but still good enough and we would have been happy with that.

“Unfortunately, since then, I have been given a five-second penalty for contact with another car. I felt I was fully up the inside and there was no need for a penalty. I have had a lot worse done to me in the past, but hey ho, we go again tomorrow and we will certainly be pushing forward.”

Restart Racing will return to action on Sunday for races 10, 11 and 12 of the 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season, with the team looking to convert Saturday’s race pace into strong points-paying results.
